Like most independent games there is good and bad. The level design can be awful at times, for instance in the 1st level before you progress any further, you have to Find the brambles to cut through, which is a tiny section in the bottom of the right corner of the map. This was horrible, it stunted the gameplay and enjoyment I was having and led to frustration as I had no idea where to go, while I did find the answer on the community guides, it’s not the only issues I’ve had with level design thus far, and in particular the map design as well. The gameplay is nothing out of the ordinary and yes it’s an rpg maker game, so just keep your expectations in check when purchasing. While the music / soundtrack is ok, I feel it was a bit of missed opportunity. I’d like to hear more creativity, it’s a metal game after all, if the developer had a band, I’d rather hear his band music then all the time having 8bit computer style music. But that’s just my opinion on the music, being a musician I’m very picky about my metal. I know 8bit is a throwback to nostalgia, etc, but nothing wrong with having in your face blaring metal freshly recorded from a studio while playing a game ( at least that’s just what I’ve come across thus far ) What I love about the game and why I’m recommending.....It’s has the most funny and clever dialogue in a Game I’ve ever played. It’s just that simple. This is what happens when you have a single developer who lacks the means to produce an AAA title, but still has he means to make a basic game. You get hilarious and engaging dialogue and story lines that keep you coming back for more. If this developer had the staff and capability to create a 3D rpg game in unity or unreal let’s say, then I have no doubt it’d be a huge sucess. I haven’t laughed this hard since I kicked my first chicken in fable. All I can say is well done. When someone takes the leap and makes a game by themselves they must wear many hats so to speak. Sometimes they nail aspects such as the dialogue and other times fall short. So if your interested in supporting a developer to help encourage them to continue making games, and furthering their own skill set, then by all means buy the game. If you like a good laugh, clever diaglogue, then you must buy the game. If your after something that’s new to the industry, a revelation, something to improve the mould, this game isn’t for you. It doesn’t do anything that hasn’t already been done before, but it does keep you entertained. How many AAA titles have you played recently that didn’t keep you entertained due to boring dialogue. I rest my case.. I got this from a friend, so I figured I'd burn through on a lazy Friday evening. I really didn't have much expectations going in, honestly, and I'm still pretty unsure of how I feel about it.Obviously, as a self-proclaimed comedy game you're really either gonna click with the writing or just kinda endure it. I was unfortunately in the latter camp, so I ended up just grinding my teeth through a lot of campy dialogue. The character writing as a whole is unfortunately pretty shallow otherwise-- there's no big character arcs packed with emotion. At best the characters are realized, but they rarely step outside of their boxes. I realize the intention was never to be that deep and poetic, but I dunno. The cast was likeable enough for me to wish there was more to them, but nothing more ever came.Gameplay is fairly box standard for an RPG Maker game. The beginning starts off uncomfortably boring, with next to no real strategy to employ and if you're familiar with RPGs at all there's no mechanics to learn, but by the midpoint you start assembling a proper party and get a substantial range of skills. Needless to say, figuring out how to properly synergize your characters is key to the late game fights. I really feel indifferent about the whole shebang; there's enough to be interesting enough but there's not enough to be truly engaging. As a side note, this game makes heavy use of stock RPG Maker assets. This isn't necessarily a problem depending on who you are, but as someone very familiar with making RPG Maker games, it came off as a bit... shoddy, for lack of better word. Original assets have zero synergy with the rest of the game, and while I can completely understand why this was, it was a bit disappointing as I felt like a strong art direction could've made this game a thousand times more charming. The lack of flavor text was also a big missed opportunity, as the item descriptions were the perfect time to squeeze out some easy jokes instead often left to hamfisted comments when chests are opened.Ultimately, though... Despite all my criticism of the game, I did actually end up liking it regardless of how many times I rolled my eyes. The game definitely has heart, and by the time I beat the final boss I oddly found myself wishing there was more. So, if you're part of the niche this game is catering to (that being the strange stoner-metal-RPG niche), you'll probably find this a pretty fun jaunt. Otherwise I'd say you're better off saving your money.. RPG Maker - I start with this - most obvious and for me it usually keeps me a bay. That would be the only negative. Now let's look at what is good in this game.Story -> not too complex, not too plain. Just enough to make player tied to the developing progress and expand the game beyond fight&survive.Humor is sometimes for a bit more mature audience, but even kids would get it and is not bad at all. Dialogues between (later) four party members are pretty cool. Combat -> we all know RPG maker combat, and this one is best of breed (what RPG maker can offer). Not to bad, not to difficult, not too easy. Graphics - you can see on screenshots, I like it. Skills and Spells are well balanced and each next level each char gets new spell or ability.Traveling -> not the hugest maps we have ever seen, what is good, because getting lost in too complex labyrinths is never a good thing. I also am happy that the main-world movement is sped up and it is not getting boring.Random encounters are well balanced. Challenging and only if you choose farming as gameplay, you might not find them challenging enough. Shops are scarce, but not too much, so you should not go out of healing potions. Also herbs improving perma stats can be bought (expensive, of course)Weapons and armors are are offered in shops gradually and in limited numbers (variety), but to afford the best ones still would take some extra time farming.Game is dynamic, well woven, and obviously tested (no bugs no issues no nothing) I do miss maps and quest tracker (maybe it's there and I just did not hit the right button...) but in general I do enjoy this game.. When I bought this game, as part of a super-cheap bundle, I wasn't expecting much. RPG Maker graphics? Indie? Single-man team? I figured it'd be a painful cringefest. I was utterly wrong. This game is fantastic. The gameplay is fun, and smooth once you figure out the fairly classic mechanics. The graphics are nostalgic sprites, and the enemies, attacks, and locations are varied. But where this game really stands out are in the areas of soundtrack and dialogue. The battle themes are absolutely pulse-pounding, to the point where I am WAY too into the fight...and its just a turn-based battle. Top notch. And like I said, the dialogue, the exploration popups? Perfection. Great jokes and an easy sense of humor make it a riot, and the dialogue in this game has made laugh on days when nothing else could. In the end, I only have one real problem with this game, and that's the painful fact that I've only been able to spend nine hours on it. I cannot recommend this game enough. Thanks, Crankage. Stay Metal, as ♥♥♥♥.. Wow! What a great little game! This is a genuinely funny and charming offering, an old-school SNES-style JRPG meshed with both crude and clever humor. Those with a musical bent will no doubt understand the numerous Metal references, and all of you pop-culture afficionados will discover a variety of treasures as well.Mechanically, the interface says "Final Fantasy", and the combat says "Earthbound". This is, of course, awesome. While this is not a particularly "deep" game (expect roughly 5-6 hours of playtime), there is enough stuff going on to keep you thoroughly entertained. Those with adventurous sensibilities will discover that Exploration is rewarded, and experience points are doled out with each new discovery. Characters have amusing backstories (do yourself a favor: make sure you have a chat with Old Man Quiver in the woods), and very distinct personalities. I felt that each character had a well-developed voice, which makes it that much more enjoyable. The soundtrack is freaking awesome. That's all I really need to say.I like to support Indie Devs, and Crankage deserves all the support you can give. Overall, for what this game costs (peanuts), it is a very worthwhile and entertaining purchase; it's the most fun you'll have without Koh's Cane (and with your pants ON, no less). Do yourself a favor and BUY this one ( from what I hear, the spinoff games are also amazing). METAL! As a Token of Gratitude...: As a token of my appreciation for all of the amazing support that you've all shown over the course of MaP, as well as the continued support that new players bring in, I've decided to add in a fair amount of characters into the next game being released by Crankage Games that are meant to represent those who helped along the way!If you've done something to support the game in any way:1. Thank you SO much, I really do appreciate the positive support you've given, (And the positive support that is still yet to come from those of you who are just joining the group!)2. Don't be surprised if you see your names in the next game as a character or part of the storyline! The next game will be a 3 part episodic comedy adventure that will not only make you laugh, but hopefully do a good job at honoring those who continue to support Crankage Games along the way!3. Episode 1 is nearly finished and will be releasing as soon as possible! Episode 2 is also being fleshed out as we speak, and Episode 3 will follow soon after! (There's still room for characters to be added to the mix as the story was written with a handful of placeholder names for the time being, so if you don't see your name in Episode 1, that doesn't mean you won't in Episode 2 and 3!) I want to be sure to give back to the community that made all of this possible, as MaP is now sold in over 90 different countries around the world! I really could not have done this without you!Thank you!- Crankage Games. New Bonus Trailer + A Big Thank You!: A lot of time has been spent.
